One-Week Pavilion Proposal

Brief

During a one-week placement at SPPARC Architects, the brief proposed the design of a pavilion intervention within Bedford Square, located just off Tottenham Court Road. Surrounded by a strong concentration of cultural, educational, and creative institutions, the site presented an opportunity to explore how temporary architecture could respond to the character and activity of central London's creative community. The project required the development of a realistic and resolved proposal within a one-week timeframe, from concept generation through to visual representation. A key constraint of the brief was the preservation of the existing mature trees across the site, requiring any architectural intervention to work sensitively within the established landscape rather than replacing or disrupting it.

Proposal

The proposal explored the idea of creating a collaborative green retreat for individuals working within the surrounding creative industries.

Inspired by the cultural atmosphere of the area and nearby institutions such as the Architectural Association, the scheme envisioned a series of pavilion spaces designed to encourage co-working, interaction and moments of pause within the city.

The design carefully wove lightweight pavilion structures between the existing trees to preserve the natural character of Bedford Square while creating a network of connected communal spaces. Titanium dioxide was proposed as an exterior material finish due to its air-purifying properties, reinforcing the project's environmental ambitions and relationship to wellbeing within the urban environment.

Developed entirely within one week, the project demonstrates a fast-paced yet comprehensive design process, combining conceptual thinking, hand sketching, digital modelling and visualisation to deliver a resolved architectural proposal within a condensed timeframe.
